Today Was a Good Day http://www.fleetingpages.com/today-was-a-good-day/ http://www.fleetingpages.com/today-was-a-good-day/#comments Sun, 08 May 2011 03:51:10 +0000 jodi http://www.fleetingpages.com/?p=352 1) We opened! (phew) And we thought that would be the highlight of the day. Quite an accomplishment considering we only had FOUR days to move-in. But then, forty-five minutes  before opening, a man started waving his umbrella outside the door, so we let him in and sold 5 books. Huzzah! Thanks, Jacques!

2) At the last minute, we made our Kickstarter goal. Thanks go out to all who contributed and helped to promote! (especially those who threatened to retract their friendship from those who didn’t back us.) We will make you proud.

3) We sold a ton of art, media, and of course—books(!!!):  321 works of art, to be exact (yes, we’re bragging!). We are counting the money and drinking champagne right now. Giddy that emails will soon go out to say “We sold X numbers of your title. Please send more!”

4) More workshops were proposed and scheduled today. The calendar is really filling up, some days are double and triple booked…but, there is still some room…we have 24,000 sqft after all.

5) We’ve already sold out of some items (so drop by soon!)–but no worries!  More authors and artists were dropping off work and emailing throughout the day, so there’ll be more to see with each passing day! And we’ll be reordering first thing in the morning.

6) Sadly, our credit card machine is late arriving, but most of the amazing folks arriving today refused to be deterred, and walked around the block to the ATM—they would not be denied their small press books!

7) Again, regrettably, we couldn’t close at 9, as we still had customers.  It may have been 9:15…

8) We have now catalogued over 500 separate titles, all of which are out on the walls and shelves, just waiting for your eyes only…and everyone else’s eyes (so, yes, get here soon!). Keep an eye on the website as they will be available for purchase online in the coming days and weeks.

9) We ALREADY have repeat customers.  We think that’s kind of awesome. What’s even awesomer- we now know a lot of them by their first names!

10)  Our youngest volunteer is 10.  She’s logged over 15 hours of work in two days, and yes, folks—she’ll be back tomorrow to run one amazing workshop (“Field Guides to Imaginary Worlds”) from 1-3 PM. You should come to this one.

11) The best part for jodi: Volunteers have started saying “we” this and “we” that. Even those we met less than 24 hours ago.  This makes her extremely happy.

12) We are famous in Canada. Well, we made it onto Canadian Yahoo!. Grand!

13) Unfortunately we were unable to fulfill a request for Bibles. But we were able to fulfill one for a WWII book.

14) Emily finally found her pick of the day “Lust and Cashmere” with 39 minutes to spare.

15) We like to eat and but FP has often taken priority. Today people fed us! We would turn around and there would either be food or the promise of food to come. So grateful!

16) As tired as they are, as late as they stayed each night the last week, as much work as this has been, — Emily, Luke, Joel, Kristin, Jennifer, Theresa, Sophie, Eric, Sam,…keep coming back. This wouldn’t have been possible without them.

17) We will get to sleep tonight! 6 hours in four days. Not easy. Even for an insomniac.

Kickstarter http://www.fleetingpages.com/kickstarter/ http://www.fleetingpages.com/kickstarter/#comments Wed, 27 Apr 2011 14:39:34 +0000 jodi http://www.fleetingpages.com/?p=323 After a few snafus with being able to announce the space, video creation (we’re book people), bank account verification issues…our Kickstarter project is finally up! And we could really use your support.

The costs for this project keep rising. According to our current calculations, we will need to sell more than 6,000 books to break-even.

Please consider backing us on Kickstarter and please share the project with others.

No, it’s not too late!! http://www.fleetingpages.com/no-its-not-too-late/ http://www.fleetingpages.com/no-its-not-too-late/#comments Tue, 26 Apr 2011 15:46:36 +0000 jodi http://www.fleetingpages.com/?p=313 In the last couple of days, many emails have shown up in the Fleeting Pages Inbox asking if it is too late to send work, create an event/workshop, become involved, or volunteer in the store.

The answer is: No, it’s not too late!!

We love that this project, what it will be in the end, is being created by so many different people from all over, through the work they are sending and their generous offers of talents, ideas, time, well-wishes…. With each new each new addition, Fleeting Pages evolves.

So if you have books, zines, comics,….or an idea for an event or workshop…..or would like to volunteer in other ways, send an email and we’ll find a way to make it happen.

If you would like your work in Fleeting Pages on the day it opens, it needs to be in Pittsburgh by May 5. Interested in sending work, but can’t make the May 5 deadline? No worries. We will be taking work through May 13.

The Location is… http://www.fleetingpages.com/the-location-is/ http://www.fleetingpages.com/the-location-is/#comments Fri, 22 Apr 2011 18:25:58 +0000 jodi http://www.fleetingpages.com/?p=299

Borders - Upper Level

Fleeting Pages can finally announce the location: The former Borders in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Both floors of the space. All 24,000 sqft of it. And lucky for us, Borders left behind a considerable number of bookshelves and other useful materials.

A big thank you to Steve Mosites and his team, especially Mike Gallup, for being open to the idea and working with Fleeting Pages to make this happen!

More interior photos can be found on the Gallery Page and the  Fleeting Pages Facebook Page

Address and google map can be found on the Location Page.

Date Change: MAY 7th http://www.fleetingpages.com/date-change-may-7th/ http://www.fleetingpages.com/date-change-may-7th/#comments Sun, 17 Apr 2011 19:56:21 +0000 jodi http://www.fleetingpages.com/?p=288 In the past three weeks, Fleeting Pages has taken on a life of its own and has grown in size. The response has been amazing. New books, zines, comics, journals, art, workshop ideas, events, are coming in every day from all over. To make sure there is enough time to move everything in and to set-up the space, the opening day had to be changed from April 30th to Saturday MAY 7th.

Take a look at the In Stock page to see the list of confirmed publishers, writers, artists…so far. More will be added as they come in.

And for those of you still wondering exactly where Fleeting Pages will happen, we’re hoping to have the okay from the owner to make that announcement later this week. Stay tuned.

Cursor & Red Lemonade http://www.fleetingpages.com/cursor-red-lemonade/ http://www.fleetingpages.com/cursor-red-lemonade/#comments Wed, 30 Mar 2011 18:26:20 +0000 jodi http://www.fleetingpages.com/?p=249 Thanks to the amazing Richard Nash, Fleeting Pages is very excited, and very humbled, to announce that our first confirmed sponsor is the community publishing platform Cursor, along with its first community Red Lemonade!!  They recognize that as the old industrial supply chain side of books goes away, an ecosystem of writing and reading is arising in its place. In this case, quite literally.

Go to Richard Nash’s blog to see artist Austin Kleon‘s illustration depicting Cursor & Red Lemonade.  It’s brilliant.

From the Cursor website:

Transforming the social contract of publishing by restoring the writer-reader relationship to its true equilibrium.

Cursor is a social approach to publishing that focuses on the establishment of powerful, self-reinforcing online membership communities made up of professional authors, reader members, and emerging writers.

The works we publish will be available as digital downloads, print publications, limited editions, and as part of an online library.

Well done, Cursor!

Thanks, Richard.

The Idea http://www.fleetingpages.com/post-theidea/ http://www.fleetingpages.com/post-theidea/#comments Thu, 24 Mar 2011 06:22:55 +0000 jodi http://www.fleetingpages.com/?p=63 In essence, Fleeting Pages consists of taking over (taking back??) one of the spaces, left empty by a failed big box bookstore in Pittsburgh, for one month, starting May 7th, and filling it with independent & self-published work of all kinds, book arts, workshops, events, and..?(insert your ideas here)?…

All revolving around various forms of written self-expression.

The idea is a result of a few things; the toll taken on local booksellers by big box bookstores, a concern for the cultural effects of big box stores in both their existence and their failure, a general frustration with the model of the publishing industry, and a great appreciation for independent and self-published works of all kinds, as well as for those who create them.

We felt compelled to do something. Fleeting Pages is what we came up with. It will test the theory that what is happening with “books” – creation, consumption, access – matters to many. And if given the opportunity to take over, or take back, one of these empty spaces they will. And in the most brilliant of ways.

The end result, what Fleeting Pages will ultimately become, is a beautiful unknown as it is dependent upon what others are willing to add. The framework is there – the space, the concept, and a few people willing to work their hardest in support of the project.

Fleeting Pages is in need of, and open to, work of all kinds to fill the shelves, ideas and people to create and run workshops, ideas for how to re-imagine the space, 30-days of events, people willing to come out and help at the space, partnerships, collaborations,….a community.

As of today, we have  5 weeks until the proposed opening day….. Let’s test what’s possible.
